Toyota Hilux Australian Recall

Toyota Australia has issued an urgent recall for 156,838 Toyota Hilux vehicles manufactured between 2015 and 2021 citing a faulty rear license plate bracket.

Toyota has found that the license plate bracket has the potential to fatigue due to vibrations when driving on roads and has the potential of falling off whilst driving.

In the official recall notice, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications said: “ Due to poor stiffness of the rear licence plate bracket around the single mounting point, there is a possibility this may lead to cracking as a result of metal fatigue caused by vibration when driving on a rough roads. In this condition, the licence plate lamp wiring may sever, and the licence plate may dislodge from the vehicle.”

This may sound like a minor fault but vehicles who are found to be driving without a license number plate face significant fines and loss of demerit points.

What to do if you own an affected Toyota Hilux?

For all affected owners Toyota will correct the issue free of charge. Toyota has also confirmed they will provide all owners involved with details of the recall by text or email. The update will be sent to your provided contact details at the time of purchase.

In the official Toyota Press Release, Toyota has confirmed the repair is expected to take 30 minutes to inspect and replace the brackets. However, Toyota have stated to call and book in with your local Toyota dealer as service and repair schedules do vary based on demand and location.
