The wagon version of the current-generation Corolla — and this one
is an E-Four car, with a separate electric motor driving the rear
axle. All-wheel-drive traction is rare on a Corolla Touring hybrid.

E-Four adds AWD without the weight, complexity or fuel penalty of a
conventional mechanical system. There's no propshaft to the rear
wheels — a compact electric motor engages when the fronts start to
slip, pulling away on a wet road, or on gravel and dirt. The rest of
the time it runs as a normal front-drive hybrid, so economy stays
close to 4.0 L/100km.

A 1.8L 2ZR-FXE Atkinson-cycle petrol engine works with a 53 kW
electric motor through an e-CVT. Self-charging — no plug, nothing to
remember. Built on Toyota's TNGA platform, it rides and steers
considerably better than the Corolla wagons that came before it,
and the long roofline and square tailgate give a genuinely useful
load bay.
