What makes this car unusual is the drivetrain. A 2.4L Atkinson-cycle
petrol engine works with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive and a separate
rear electric motor, giving E-Four all-wheel drive alongside hybrid
economy of around 5.6 L/100km. No Australian-delivered people mover
of this era offered that combination — you either got all-wheel
drive or you got economy, not both.

There's no propshaft to the rear axle. The rear motor engages
electrically when the fronts lose traction — exactly what you want
