Description
The W123 coupe is the car that Mercedes-Benz got right in every proportion. Two doors, no B-pillar, frameless glass that drops cleanly into the doors, and a roofline that sits lower and wider than the sedan. Only a fraction of W123 production was allocated to coupes, and the 280CE with its DOHC M110 six-cylinder and Bosch K-Jetronic injection sits at the top of the range. This is an Australian-delivered example with a compliance plate confirming a February 1981 build date.
The Copper Metallic paint is a colour you do not see often, and it still carries genuine gloss across the bonnet, doors, and boot lid. Panel gaps are consistent and the body appears straight with no obvious dent damage. The full-length chrome body-side moulding runs intact on both flanks. Under the bonnet, the M110 inline-six presents in original, unrestored condition with blue silicone plug leads as the only visible aftermarket addition. The inner guards appear clean. Factory Bundt 14-inch alloy wheels are fitted on all four corners. At 379,332 km, the interior shows honest wear. Tan MB-Tex with woven cloth inserts is the original combination, and while there is creasing on the seat bolsters and lightening on the high-wear areas, there are no rips or splits. The rear seat presents well. A dash mat covers the dashboard, and an aftermarket JVC head unit sits in place of the original radio.
W123 coupes have been steadily climbing in the Australian market as clean examples disappear into collections. Presentable coupes have traded between $15,000 and $30,000 in recent sales, with top-condition examples pushing higher.
