Description
The C3 Corvette is the longest-running generation of America's sports car, and this 1980 example comes with a significant mechanical head start. The original engine has been replaced with a GM Performance ZZ4 350ci crate engine, a well-regarded unit that produces approximately 355 horsepower straight out of the crate. The engine block casting number (14038279) visible in the photos is consistent with GM Performance Parts crate engine blocks, supporting the vendor's claim. A Turbo 700 automatic transmission has been paired with it. Vendor advises both engine and transmission have low mileage since installation.
This is a deceased estate project where significant mechanical work was completed but cosmetic finishing was not. The vendor reports overhauled brakes, rebuilt front and rear suspension, fuel system flush, carburettor rebuild, and power steering work. The photos show a Holley air cleaner on the carburettor and red performance spark plug wires. The body is fiberglass as standard, with the bonnet noted as a different material, which is visible in the photos as a slightly different surface texture and sheen compared to the body panels. The T-top panels have been removed. The centre console is partially disassembled with exposed wiring visible. The dashboard appears uncracked, which is a genuine positive on a C3. The seats are black leather/vinyl and in fair condition. Rubber seals throughout are deteriorated and will need replacement. There is a scrape with paint transfer on the left rear quarter near the taillight.
The real value proposition here is the ZZ4 crate engine and Turbo 700 transmission already installed, with supporting mechanical work completed. A new ZZ4 crate engine alone is north of $10,000 AUD. Project C3 Corvettes in Australia typically trade between $12,000 and $25,000, with the crate engine upgrade pushing this one toward the upper end of that range. For someone who wants a classic Corvette with genuine horsepower and just needs to handle the cosmetics, this is a strong starting point.
