Info about this vehicle:

1963 Triumph TR 4-6 Special - Rare South African 6-Cylinder - Signal Red - Removable Hardtop - Alloy Wheels
1963 Triumph TR 4-6 Special. Right hand drive. 6-cylinder petrol engine with Stromberg carburettors. 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Rear wheel drive. Indicating 92,020 miles (true mileage unknown). 4 seats. Sold unregistered. Requires mechanical attention.
Description
The TR 4-6 Special is one of the rarest and most interesting variants in the whole Triumph TR family. Built specifically for the South African market, it combined the TR4 body and running gear with a 6-cylinder engine, essentially previewing what the TR5 and TR6 would later offer to the rest of the world. Very few of these were made and even fewer have made it to Australia, which is exactly why this car is worth paying attention to. The fact that it's wearing its original Signal Red paint, retains the removable hardtop, has the overdrive gearbox and runs Stromberg carbs rather than the twin SU setup of later cars, makes it a legitimate collector's piece that enthusiasts will travel for.
Cosmetically it presents well from a distance. The red paint carries a strong gloss across the bonnet, front wings and doors, and the body panels are straight with no obvious major dents or repairs. Chrome front bumper, grille surround, headlamp bezels and Triumph badge all present and shining. The removable hardtop fits flush, matches the body colour, and the rear glass is clear. Alloy wheels in a period-appropriate multi-spoke style look the part and suit the car well. Inside the cabin the door cards are intact in black vinyl, the Smiths instrumentation is all present in the dash, and the wooden-rimmed steering wheel adds to the period character. The cream dashboard paintwork has crazed and faded as these all do with age, which is honest and expected.
Now for the honest bit, because this car needs to go to someone who knows what they're doing with it. The seller discloses that it requires a jump start and will not idle without someone holding the throttle. These are real issues but they're not scary ones. On the TR inline-six, this points to a flat battery or charging system issue, plus carburettor diaphragm wear or a vacuum leak, all well-understood repairs with good parts availability. There is also some exposed wiring visible at the lower dash that should be properly addressed. The boot carpet is lifting at the edges and the boot aperture shows minor surface corrosion that should be treated. Odometer shows 92,020 miles but roll-over is possible on these cars so true mileage is unknown.
For the right buyer this is a compelling project, one of the rarest TRs you'll ever find at auction in Australia, with a solid body and a well-documented set of known issues to sort. Get it running properly an
